General pest control
Ant control
Ant trails across the bench are usually coming from a nest you cannot see, in the garden, under paving or inside a wall. Lasting control means dealing with the source, not just the trail.
Where ants come from
Gardens and lawns
Nests in soil, mulch, garden edges and around tree roots.
Under paving and slabs
Sand and soil pushed up between pavers or along the slab edge.
Inside walls
Wall cavities, power points and gaps around window frames.
Plants touching the house
Branches and vines give ants a bridge straight into the building.
Signs of an ant problem
Trails
Lines of ants along skirting boards, benches, window sills or power cords.
Small mounds or soil
Little piles of soil or sand between pavers or along walls.
Activity that keeps coming back
Ants returning soon after you have cleaned up or used a surface spray.
Winged insects
Swarms of winged insects inside. These can be ants or termites, so it pays to check.
Is it ants or termites?
Winged termites and flying ants can look alike, especially when they swarm on warm, humid evenings. If you find wings or swarms inside, collect a few in a jar or take a clear photo and get Chris to have a look.
Help keep them away
Clean up spills and crumbs
Especially anything sweet or greasy.
Store food in sealed containers
Including pet food bowls, which are an easy target.
Trim plants back from the house
Cut off the bridges ants use to get inside.
Avoid surface sprays on trails
Spraying a trail can scatter ants and make the nest harder to deal with.
